Context
Cambridge School of Art is a UK art school teaching students across a wide range of creative disciplines – from graphic design, photography and fine art to film and television production, computer games, fashion design, illustration and interior design. The project involved creating the graphic concept and visual identity for a degree show presenting work by students from many different fields.
Challenge
The challenge was to create one consistent look for an event that brought together many different courses, creative languages and forms of expression. The visual system had to be bold enough to give the whole show its character, yet open enough not to overpower the students’ work. It needed a concept that would capture the energy of change, creativity and diversity without boxing the event into an overly literal aesthetic.
Strategy
The graphic concept was built on the metaphor of change – a process naturally tied to the moment of graduating and stepping into the next stage of a creative career. Abstract forms, vivid colours and subtle texture created a visual language full of movement, curiosity and energy. The look was designed to grab attention, invite exploration and create the atmosphere of an event that is not just a showcase of work but an experience of transition, growth and creative courage.
Outcome
The result is an abstract, dynamic and memorable identity for the degree show that brought diverse creative disciplines together in one visual system. The concept gave the event a distinctive character, amplifying its energy and highlighting the moment of change the graduates find themselves in. At the same time, it stayed subtle and flexible enough to support the work on display rather than compete with it. It’s a project in which the event identity became not just a backdrop but part of the experience of the show.
